The largest city in the US State of Vermont, Burlington, is expected to vote on a resolution endorsing the antisemitic Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against the State of Israel on September 13, 2021. If the resolution passes, Burlington would become the first city in the United States to enact antisemitic pro-BDS legislation.

Urge the Burlington City Council to SAY NO to the ANTISEMITIC BDS Movement! The BDS Movement’s antisemitism is well documented and has been classified as antisemitic by the U.S. State Department, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, and others.

The proposed resolution itself is biased, misinformed, and antisemitic in nature. The resolution singularly condemns Israel for placing Gaza “under military siege and an economic blockade by Israel since 2007,” without mentioning that Egypt is an equal enforcer of the blockade on its border with Gaza. Furthermore, the resolution states that “This May, Israeli forces subjected Gaza to a devastating air and artillery attack…,” outrageously failing to mention that Israel’s military action was in response to the US-designated foreign terrorist organization Hamas, which controls the Gaza strip, indiscriminately firing thousands of rockets into Israeli cities and towns.

The resolution calls for the elimination of Israel by calling for the resettling of millions of Palestinian Arabs inside of Israel, without equal justice for the similar number of Jewish refugees who were forced out of Arab lands following Israel’s independence. Calling for the destruction of Israel, home to the world’s largest Jewish community with more than 6,000,000 Jewish residents, is not only morally repugnant but the pinnacle of contemporary antisemitism.

This resolution, which unfairly singles out the Jewish homeland, has been scheduled during the holiest time of the year for Jewish people. By scheduling the vote during the 10 Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanna and Yom Kippur, the resolution’s drafters have sought to exclude Jewish Vermonters from adequately participating in debate around the merits of the resolution. The timing of the vote itself discriminates against Jewish people.

City councils ought to focus on the betterment of their municipalities and not interfere with US foreign policy. On university campuses and in public protests this past year, supporters of the BDS movement have engaged in well-documented acts of hate and violence against Jewish Americans. Burlington must not allow its city to become a safe place for Jew-hate.

Omar Barghouti, founder of the BDS movement has stated emphatically “Most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No Palestinian, rational Palestinian, not a sell-out Palestinian, would ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The goal of the BDS movement is not coexistence, but the elimination of the world’s only Jewish State, an outcome that would undoubtedly end in bloodshed and violence. As Jewish Americans grapple with an unprecedented rise in antisemitism, Burlington must encourage peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians, not support antisemitic and divisive resolutions that would endanger not only the Jewish community in Israel, but also the Jewish community in Vermont.

The resolution calls for the elimination of Israel, home to the world’s largest Jewish community. This morally repugnant resolution, which will take place during the Jewish High Holidays discriminates against Jewish Vermonters.
